The Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce created the Cultural Affairs Committee as an outgrowth from the 2009 Board of Director's Retreat, placing the Arts as they related to the quality of life for the City of Joplin as their number five goal. In addition, it related to the City of Joplin's 2007 and 2009 Envisioning Process, where area citizens asked that Public Art and Art activities be added to the short and long term goals for the City.
Goal 1
Cultural Arts Center Creation
- Research and host community leaders from successful cultural art centers
- Identify and meet with key leaders on this project
- Perform needs survey of community arts organizations
Goal 2
Establish Public Mural Project
- Concentrate on one mural in place by end of 2010
- Research grant opportunities for submission
- Research other funding options
Goal 3
Community Events for Arts Visibility
- Design four events to engage and involve a variety of age groups from children to seniors
- Develop a resource directory and master schedule of local venues available to artists and the dates/times these venues are in use and by whom
- Identify three major community events already established that may welcome involvement from artists
